A brief welcome message from Don Grusin:

The dream I had to develop a course of research and audio and video
production in a strong university community came true during the fall semester 2008!

We produced dvd's with a compelling social relevance and I'd like to invite you see

Here are the majors, areas of expertise that we were involved with

last semester.

Economic Development and Environmental Economics,
Music performance, production and/or technology,
Broadcast Journalism,
Film production and technology,
Art and Design, Art History, Fine Arts,
Digital Media,
Photography,
Marketing.

Now for this coming Fall Semester 2009 I am seeking Student who have

strong interest, working knowledge, and some applied experience in an even wider array

of fields and backgrounds including but not limited to these majors:

Sociology,
Engineering,
Medicine,
Chemistry,
Architecture,
Math,
Physics,
Marketing

We will again virtually join forces with our music and art friends around the

world who are also working with or developing organizations promoting positive

social change. We will document and assist international social change projects
existing in Australia, Peru, Japan, Brasil, Africa, by creating original
contemporary world music videos to deliver the message surrounding their
economic and social needs.

Our music and art collaborateurs in these regions will provide audio,

pics, ideas, descriptions, goals and missions for our class videos, and we will

provide the same to them. We will produce music and video DVD’s that bring

these projects to life through the appropriate and creative use of music and

video.

The final products will be disseminated to viable social action networks

involved in community development with the assistance of my fellow

international collaborators as well as new associates to be identified from

networking and study by the students.

My aim is to have a heightened awareness develop in each of the students

from the cross-fertilization of interdisciplinary work and discussions that are

enhanced from this kind of hybridization of otherwise independent fields.

There will be ~ 5 students on each team, each from different disciplines.

And by this kind of interchange, new perspectives create new ways of

looking,thinking and dealing withthe world of social change.

Students will network by email and other communication media among

themselves (intra-CU by means of the wiki sites, Facebook, and/or dedicated

ATLAS portals)and globally with the individuals and organizations involved in

music and thesocial action reality and development opportunities.

Week 1 Aug 24th
At the 1st class all students will describe why they are interested, and
they’ll list their areas of familiarity and expertise. I will describe the 3
to 5 projects we will investigate, introduce participating faculty, and by
use of the Internet, the regional artists and the community development
people who have agreed to participate.
We will organize the gear* for our use in research and production of the
global music videos, and assign relevant discipline tasks to each student
to determine the mix and depth of qualifications of those who sign up.
We will begin to choose projects and establish teams. I will begin an
overview of the economics of the project regions and we’ll assign to the
Econ students research goals for their chosen project.

Week 2 Aug 31st
Devoted to networking with and researching the various social action
projects. Students will form up to five different investigation and
production units of ~ 5 students each and to describe and report back
on internet communications through websites, email, Skype,

Facebook, i-chat, Twitter, andother global interconnects with each

of the organizations intheir chosen geographic region.
For example 5 students, one per each department involved, may take on
the Tjupurru Schools Project in Australia and New Zealand, another 5
may join the Children’s Development Agencies in Peru with Jean Pierre
Magnet, a third team to investigate the Kids’ Earth Fund run by Harumi
Torii in Tokyo, Guitars for Guns in Laos, and the same regarding other

potential projects withLebanon, Brasil, Africa, even Colorado.

Week 3 Sept 7th
Each student representing the various disciplines will begin assessing
the manner in which we will describe the various projects.
This will allow the intra-class multidisciplinary cross-talk to create
awareness of each IPU group’s discoveries and recommendations for
creating appropriate styles and designs of audio-video production.
There will be video and/or written reports required every other week
from each IPU to be shared with all class members.

Week 4 Sept 14th
Students will create user names for their own IPUs, and the names or
titles of the productions, and create all the work and study from an
ownership perspective. The end products will become the property of
the class and the IPUs. We will discuss copyrights, non-profits, and
adhere to the spirit of international law regarding use of downloadable
music, photos, video and other intellectual copyrights.
We will begin to set up individual team websites so that we can easily
traverse the Internet adding data and websites that will participate
with our end goal which will be a finished DVD production. It will be the
purpose of each team to become comfortable editing and increasing the
relevant data and we will make available to the project participants an
easy way for them to communicate, add files, make recommendations,
and allow the viral nature of the daily activity to expand and evolve.
Watching this transformation will be a main purpose of the class, so the
process will truly be the meat and potatoes of our time together.

Week 5 Sept 21st
Students will continue energizing the in-class and international
relationships with the growing network of social action people and
projects. During class time we will organize meetings of students in
each department for consultation regarding their findings and develop
problem-solving techniques. For example the economists will meet with
their counterpart economists in the other IPU’s, video with video, etc.
Don Grusin will monitor each meeting to insure full participation and
document earnest research interest.

Week 6 Sept 28th
Each IPU will create and develop its adopted project plans for using the
music and pictures and other potential media to bring heightened public
attention to these regional causes. The marketing and art students
from each IPU will be responsible for directing those outreach and
publicity tasks, the economists for assessing and presenting the
development scenarios, the music students for sound and music relevant
to the projects, as will the video, photo, film students do the same in
their respective fields. Students will begin to assemble photos, videos,
and music to create a class-wide data-base from which to draw for use
in the creation of the DVD’s. Video and music clips will be created by
the IPU’s, and be combined with clips coming into the database from
each of these regions, played and or photographed by local artists and
videographers, as well as the publicity outreach departments of the
project action groups themselves.

Week 7 Oct 5th
As a kind of mini-midterm, each IPU will report to the class their status:
(1) the historic and current relationship with their project social action
organization,
(2) the timeliness of the new innovations that will be derived from the
interplay between each IPU and it’s target cause and music-video
production,
(3) the hard data media being edited and adapted to the purposes of
each cause.
Without making the inter-IPU’s competitive, I want to encourage a
healthy spirit of making the best DVD possible, and the resulting work
to create hits might be seen to instill greater efforts.

Week 8 Oct 12th
This would be the time for the departmental faculty of the students
represented to join us for a round table discussion of our progress to
present. I will invite the economics, art, film, marketing and music
faculty to weigh in on ideas that will have evolved by our
interdisciplinary interaction. And my students will contribute to the
interdepartmental dialogue, which will surely advance the state of
awareness of the projects and social entrepreneurship and innovation.
At the same time this interaction will require a high level of teamwork
and my plan is for these faculty people to enhance this open-platform
atmosphere with advice about alternative outreach, research methods,
editing techniques, music approaches, etc. In other words this week will
be about feedback and forward. Recess.

Week 9 Oct 19th and Week 10 Oct 26th
The IPUs will edit and mix each of the targeted projects with
assistance from our TA with emphasis on cross-fertilization
of ideas from each of the departments’ areas of expertise. We will need
substantial studio time at production facilities for experimentation
leading completion of these final DVD productions.
This period before the fall break and Thanksgiving will be intensively
productive and will begin the real process of producing and editing files,
creating music, videoing and recording clips that will become part of the
final project DVD’s from each of the regions.

Week 11 Nov 2nd
Each IPU will begin presenting to the class and to their project
affiliates their video clips and and music tracks and related media, .and
the effect of their semester-long
participation in the causes of the target regions’ social action
organizations. Rather than a mid-term exam, this will be the week for
interviews with each student, to assess their grades and to promote one
last effort to make the final productions truly great! Simultaneously, all
IPU teams will continue to research, record, shoot, and develop closer
ties with their project people by use of team websites and direct
conferences with the affiliates.
Preview Presentations of these results will be scheduled in
Boulder/Denver for local feedback and participation, and in the
respective project regions, TBA with the co- participation of those
organizations. We plan to have live conference presentations with the
teams and their organizations, with planning for this latter stage
depending upon the Marketing students public relations outreach during
the semester.

Week 12 Nov 9th
Production and organization of the videos, the music tracks, the
accounting of the project by Art and Film and Marketing. The economic
analysis of the effect of this information on the project areas will be
assessed and written up in a document. It will be videoed, and the
marketing of the final projects will make connections to the US public as
well as international development networks. Continued work on each
video, collection and storage of data files, beginning of press relations
both locally and internationally to prepare for release of the DVD’s to
global audience during the holidays. Interviews with the press and
internet organizations to promote the playing of the DVD’s.

Week 13 Nov 16th
Beginning of community outreach both locally and abroad to enhance
discussions of the evidence in the DVD’s.
Again continued work on each video, collection and storage of data files,
beginning of press relations both locally and internationally to prepare
for release of the DVD’s to global audience during the holidays.
Interviews with the press and Internet organizations to promote the
playing of the DVD’s

Week 14 Nov 23rd– Thanksgiving
Week 15 Nov 30th
Final showings in venues to be arranged by the class and outreach
Week 16 Dec 7th
Last class, last interviews, Press Conferences, meetings with all students
for grades.

Gentrification and Incarceration in Postcolonial Dialogue

Capturing the Issue
Video Recorders, cell phones and digital cameras have given people a unique opportunity to see first hand the effects of gentrification and incarceration on our society. By extending our eyes beyond what we see in the mainstream media and giving us a more objective view, we can begin to make our own judgements. Sometimes these unsensored events are horrific and brutal but nevertheless, they are real and often times under the radar of society. However, digital video has born a whole new era of activism and violence can be a rapid catalyst for action. Police are often the first to react to these types of event and we are seeing increasingly that they don't posess the proper judgement skills to handle these situations. So they remain the main pervayers of a colonial society. Dealing with this defect of society will be our focus and the intention is to unveil some of the causes these acts. Our proposal is to make the explicit connection between violent events in the community and the reactions of modern activist, poets and musicians.

In the words of — Frederick Douglass Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. Upholding our implicit morals is a difficult task when the vast majority of society are very passive to this process. Without the passion for change many humans ignore societies greatest problems. Artists are sometimes societies moral compass and it is important to pay attention to what they are saying.

Likewise, the connections between social phenomena must be acknowledged in an explicit and accessible manner. If this is not done, the symptoms of economic exploitation will be allowed to run their course as series of “unrelated” events. With this in mind, it is necessary to probe the relationship between police brutality and the gentrification of communities in the Denver Metro area. With greater tax revenue going toward police departments in communities subject to “urban renewal”, the manner in which community members with lower incomes or overlooked social positions are interacting with increasingly more heavily armed and privileged police forces is a relationship needing investigation if one is to evaluate the implications of forms of economic development and policy in social, political and economic dimensions. "The Soul of the Street"

We have all at least once appreciated the sounds of street musicians while we worked, shopped, or played.

We have all had an experience with music, allowing it to brighten our gloomy days, inspire us to do more, and making it a necessary part of our lives.

Five CU students; Serafin Sanchez, Cameron Wyatt, Leigh Alan, James Gutowski, and Grant Reynolds, sent off to capture the emotion, benefit, and struggle of street musicians.

Through one short film, they will enlighten audiences as to how lucky we all are to have these musicians filling our souls as we hustle through the noisy streets, day to day, too often ignoring how positive they really are.

Fairloom of Boulder is working to help the original Fairloom organization that is based Massachusettes.

Fairloom brings the products of Brazilian bobbin-lacemaking to the United States from the community of Terra Prometida, Brazil. This not only helps build a sustainable education and economic foundation for the community of Terra Prometida, but it also brings the spirit of Terra Prometida to the United States: helping our neighbors, caring for one another, embracing life, and enjoying the company of those around us. Terra Prometida was built from the ground up by 250 families and now thrives on joyful expression through art, song, and dance.

Fairloom of Boulder is working on creating a promotional video that gives a brief history of Terra Prometida, shows the process of bobbin-lacemaking, and displays the beautiful garments and acessories the women have made. The video will be shown to businesses in the Denver/Boulder area in an effort to ecourage the buying and selling of bobbin lace products in order for the people of Terra Prometida to profit from their products and be able to sustain their families and community.

Our goal is to create a video highlighting Mongolian culture with an emphasis on its music. Through our search for contacts and information on Mongolia, we stumbled upon a school in Denver that teaches Mongolian culture. We have met with local Mongolian musician Aruinbold and filmed him playing the traditional Mourin Kur Horsehead and teaching local students. We have also met with Peace Corps Volunteers who spent time in Mongolia. Yan, our expertise film editor, has also traveled to Mongolia and brought back beautiful footage of rural Mongolia. Ken Iwamisa, a Professor here at the University, teaches a digital photography class that travels to Mongolia and we have the privalige of using some of his photographs. As a group we have shot comparison scenery shots here in the Denver/Boulder area as well as filmed our interviews. Dustin and Virgina transcribed a traditional Mongolian song for the piano and french horn which will provide for some musical enrichment within our video.

We have met some incredible people and can't wait for the world to learn all about Mongolia, the school here in Denver and Aruinbold and his beautifully unique music.

Don Grusin

Don Grusin is a Grammy Award winning pianist / keyboardist, composer,
producer, arranger, and songwriter of contemporary jazz and world music. He
was introduced to the music business in the 70’s when he was invited to play
and record with Quincy Jones in the US and Japan.

He has recorded many CDs which you may read about in his discography and
the Grammy details if you go to his website www.dongrusin.com.

Don was raised in Colorado, graduated from the University of Colorado with a
Master’s degree in economics. He taught as a Fulbright Economics Professor
in Mexico, and at Foothill College in California. In 2006 he received the
Norlin Distinguished Achievement Award from CU.

Don Grusin writes and records original music at Bad Dog Music studio in

Venice, California, for his own projects and other US and

international artists. He teaches master classes in composition,

improvisation and social issues at colleges and universities

worldwide. This year, he is also producing and recording CDs with the new

Brazilian artists Renato Braz and Antonio Villeroy and is just now

releasing his latest solo piano and loops Piano in Venice.

Release scheduled for September.

This video was a quickly created overview of the kids' art for the recent 20th anniversary of the creation of this organization. It's old friend Michael Sembello's voice and his band Bossa Nova Hotel you'll hear.( You may recognize his voice from Stevie Wonder days). Francesco Romano Frz did the animation and our Los Angeles partner Richard Rudolph and Michael co-wrote this theme for the event. We'll link up with the administrative offices in Tokyo. The ATLAS Building

While ATLAS' programs are integrated throughout the CU-Boulder campus and beyond,
the core and model for ATLAS and its programs is the 66,000-square foot, $31-million ATLAS building. The ATLAS building is a programmatically-driven, culture-changing facility. It serves as the core location for:
• New multidisciplinary curricula and research involving information technology, supported by student/faculty studio/design clusters.
• The creation and use of new technology-enhanced teaching and learning approaches in all disciplines, supported by teaching, production and multimedia facilities.
• Drawing the CU community and beyond into the networked information age through its exhibition and performance facilities and its distance learning capabilities. Design and construction of the ATLAS building was a student, state, federal, industry and private partnership.

Educational Technology

• ATLAS works with the full spectrum of campus disciplines to facilitate the use of educational technologies in instruction, including distance collaboration, and to assess the effectiveness of that use. The ATLAS building's high-tech, flexible learning spaces provide the environment for much of this work.
