Hey everyone, I'm sorry to spam the boards but I though you all may be interested. I'm in a remix contest for the hip-hop artist K-oS. Check out my remix and if you dig it please drop a vote. You dont have to register or sign up for anything either. I'm in 8th place and if I win I get to have my track on hip album (Universal Records).

here is our team's promotion video:

the description is within the youtube page, in the description field, but just for reference,
"Participating in a CU Boulder Technology Arts & Media class called 'World Music Video As A Catalyst For Social Change', students Cody St Arnold and David Silvis' project focuses on showcasing the vast array of musical genres and styles present throughout the world which many people, young & old, come to take for granted. We hope to gather information from musician-friends as well as professional musicians, abroad, to provide a commentary on what music means to musicians as well as where they feel music is today. Through meeting with these musicians, as well as CU's very own Ethnomusicology advisor, we hope to pair the commentary with actual, personally improvised musical performances that we (and with the help of fellow friends and musicians) will play both on CU's Radio 1190 radio show, as well as in a live setting somewhere on CU's campus. We hope to share as many types of music with the general public, so that everyone can ultimately grasp the commonalities and unity among the many diverse forms of musical entertainment"

A short description of our project:
By: ,
Nov 17 2008, 3:01 AM EST
Basically, what our project consists of is the production of a short documentary highlighting the street music scene in Boulder and Denver. We're getting insights from the musicians themselves, as well as recording some of their live performances. In addition, we also take the everyman's opinion into consideration, using interviews with pedestrians as a medium. The musicians that we focus on all have different backgrounds, and are playing the streets for different reasons; some do it to make a few extra bucks, while others rely on their tips as a source of income. Overall, the message of our film is this: Not everyone appreciates street musicians, but they should. They add a little something to walking malls and corners all over the country, and they should be viewed as a positive addition to many outdoor environments (Also, you should totally tip them if you enjoy their tunes!).

Hey Dustin, hope you're feeling better! We came up with this kind of outline of topics we want to address in the film- the questions below are just to begin brainstorming. We're hoping to make a timeline by next class that will dictate at what point we plan to complete various stages of the project and the final product.
Festival • show pictures- what is being celebrated? • play music tracks from Iwamasa Children (draw parallels) • similarities in environmental scenery (mountains) • contrasts in transportation modes (school bus vs. horse) Arts role in culture (music and visual arts) • How important are the arts in Mongolian culture? Has this importance increased or decreased as a result of the move to Western culture? tradition/religion • what traditions are activated here in Denver life and what traditions have been left behind in Mongolia? • What religious themes exist and how are they similar to western themes? family life • What role does each family member play? how is this similar to western families/how is it different? • What is the typical Mongolian family like? has family structure transformed to fit American lifestyles? world view- how the regard the environment • What relationship do Mongolians have with the environment in their home land? Has their attitude shifted since their move to America, and how do they feel about American’s attitude toward nature?

Connecting Police Brutality to Hip-Hop

Seth and I have started to consider the musical angle of our copwatch project. Hip hop is and obvious avenue as it takes the most direct approach to the situation. However, It may be difficult to present a neutral view on the subject as many rap lyrics are charged with emotion and heavily weighted opinions.
The following link is a well articulated article about how hip hop deals with police brutality.

Hey guys! Sorry it took long to finally write something up here.
Dave and I had an interesting discussion with last Monday's time we spent in groups together about his focus on the look into Dub music, and with examining his own case, it brought more attention towards just the sheer music representation inside our own country. In some sort of way, I feel that the way Tjupurru (the Australian "digi-bone" player) used his sort of education in Australian schools could be used as such an example of educating the youth through music to not only educate the music sense but as a sort of tool for cultural understanding and education within society.
I'll leave it as that but I'm still trying to meditate on this idea onto what other sorts of steps I can take for this (talking to Ethnomusicoligist professor, jazz professors, etc.)

Greetings: I apologize for not having made my presence known, I have been mad busy lately and have just now established an internet connection. My name is Seth, I'm an organizer who's been dealing primarily with organizers the Denver Hip-Hop scene and in the area of youth mentorship. I have been lately enamored with Paolo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, especially as it pertains to how our privilege can be engaged in solidarity with those who have been heretofore denied these privileges. I have been discussing this course with some contacts of mine dealing with youth leadership nationwide, and so far I have seen interest from the Denver Social Justice organization with which I've been engaged in youth Mentorship, and with a some of friends who are fixtures in the Denver Hip-Hop community. Personally, even though this may be a tad late in the game, I think that discussion is essential in that we look to these community organizations to see not only what social issues are in need of being addressed, but moreso in figuring out how our artistic and academic resources can be strategically employed as part of the overall plans of these community leaders. If you want to check it out, the ArtN'Motion program engages graffiti culture for youth leadership, social justice and community health education (www.sistersofcolorunited.org). You can myspace the Denver Avengerz, Babah Fly, or Mike Wird/Whuerock Ma'at to see what they're putting out. Once again, a means to make welcomed and informed interventions in these communities and to facilitate collaborations of Praxis among interconnected communities is available to us, so anyone interested in what I'm talking about should be comfortable with putting his or her ego aside to get something real going. Much Love, Seth

Hey guys, I thought this might be helpful -- ITS has a map of all the computer labs on campus. If you click on the location of the lab it will show all the software that's installed on the computers in that particular lab. It also shows when it's available to the public and when it's reserved.
